Core Philosophy
One of the central ideas of Montessori philosophy is that within each child is the person he or she will become. To develop a child’s fullest physical, spiritual, and intellectual potential, Montessori education emphasizes freedom that is achieved through order and self-discipline.
To a child, the world can first appear full of sights and sounds that seem chaotic. Gradually, the child begins to create order, distinguish among impressions, and gain mastery over self and environment.
Prepared Environment
Dr. Maria Montessori created what she called the prepared environment: an ordered classroom with sequential learning materials that are developmentally appropriate, beautiful, and inviting to children.
In a non-competitive Montessori classroom, these materials allow each child to move at his or her own pace. This encourages confidence, supports mastery, and helps children build strong habits before entering more competitive learning situations.
Why It Matters
The years between three and six are not only important for academic readiness, but also for learning the basic rules of human behavior. These are the years when children most naturally develop good habits, manners, self-control, and respect for others.
